1806 - Launch of the first printing house

In 1806, an Opavian printmaker, Fabian Beinhauer, came to Cieszyn and in today’s Stroma street he opened the first printing house in the town’s history. His stay in Cieszyn was short. In the same year he sold his business to Tomasz Prochaska, who came from Prague. Prochaska developed his business, gained clients and started the dynasty of Cieszyn printers. In the 1880s, Karol Prochaska opened a new company headquarters at today's Hlavní street in Český Těšín. The prosperity of one of the largest printing houses in the Austro-Hungarian Empire lasted until 1920. After the division of Cieszyn Silesia between Poland and Czechoslovakia, the publishing market significantly shrank and financial problems began, ending with the acquisition of the company by the bank.
